bike works holme moss circular - 35 miles

If you are new to this section or website then please read the Introduction to Road Riding post first. If you are new to road riding make sure you are confident riding the Bike Works Saddleworth Moor circular

This is a moderate – hard ride.

The climbs
There are three new climbs to watch out for; Hade Edge, Dunford Bridge and Holme Moss itself. The climb from New Mill through Hade Edge is long with a steep section at the start. Much of the climb is a steady gradient, but a head wind will make it harder going. This part of the route tends to face the prevailing wind. The climb out of Dunford Bridge up to the Woodhead Pass has a very steep section at the start that will put most riders into bottom gear or great difficulty depending on the bike. Holme Moss has a deserved reputation. Most of the climb is steady but the steep starter section of the climb proper means most riders will be grovelling all the way thereafter, especially since the climb from Dunford Bridge is already in the legs. It should be noted that just when the end is within reach the road kicks up again in a demoralising fashion.

The route
Leave Bike Works and turn right into Manchester Rd.

Just after Milnsbridge turn right up Park Road West. Continue on this road through the junctions at Blackmoorfoot Rd and Lockwood Bar until Honley.

Straight on at Honley lights through Brockholes.

Turn right onto the Holmfirth Rd at New Mill then immediately left, bearing left up the hill.

Turn right at the Paris T junction.

Go straight across the Penistone Rd then left onto the Dunford Rd in Hade Edge.

Turn right at the T Junction for Dunford Bridge taking care on the steep descent and watching for the bend at the bottom. There can be a lot of turning traffic here.

Turn Right at the T junction onto the Woodhead Pass, downhill for a couple of miles and over the bridge at the end of the reservoir. Woodhead Pass is a very busy transpennine route, be aware that following traffic may try and pass when it is not safe if they are frustrated by your presence.

Turn Right onto the A6024 signed to Huddersfield and Holmfirth. This is a very tricky junction. It is concealed from view on the approach and doubles back on itself. If in doubt of how to address it dismount and push the bike across the road.

Follow the road over the moor, through Holmfirth to Honley and backtrack on the route out from Bike Works.
